Recent extreme weather disasters
Six recent examples of uncomfortable weather.
Severe hailstorm – Bengaluru, India
May 2026: A heavy hailstorm mixed with rain swept through Bengaluru, India, after the region had been experiencing extreme heat above 43°C / 109°F. The sudden storm helped cool the area, covering streets with ice and creating scenes of “free ice water” for residents. While the ice and runoff were not necessarily safe to drink, the event showed how quickly weather can shift from dangerous heat to intense hail, flooding, and disruption.
Mayon Volcano eruption – Albay, Philippines
May 2026: Mayon Volcano erupted in Albay, Philippines, producing a massive ash plume and dramatic volcanic activity. As seen in the video from May 2, 2026, it was described as the largest volcanic eruption in the last 100 years in terms of the amount of volcanic ash ejected. The eruption showed how quickly ashfall, lava activity, poor air quality, and evacuation risks can disrupt nearby communities.
Heavy hailstorm – Qassim Region, Saudi Arabia
April 2026: Daytime temperatures in the region often reached over 90°F / 32°C, yet powerful hailstorms still swept through parts of Qassim. The contrast shows how severe weather can develop even during hot conditions, quickly disrupting roads, homes, and daily life.
Severe flooding – Hawaii, USA
March 2026: Most severe Kona storm in over 20 years flooded many parts of Hawaii, prompting mass evacuations in Oahu and Maui.
Tornadoes – Michigan, USA
March 2026: Powerful tornadoes caused widespread destruction.
Avalanche – Truckee, CA, USA
February 2026: A powerful California avalanche buried backcountry skiers, prompting a massive rescue and mourning.
Bomb cyclone / extreme winter storm – United States
January-February 2026: A “bomb cyclone” brought widespread snow and dangerous cold, causing major disruptions and reported fatalities.
Severe storm with flooding/mudslide risk – California, USA
October 2025: A powerful storm system brought heavy rain/wind to fire-scarred hillsides, prompting evacuations over mudslide/flooding concerns.
Wildfires
June 2025: Unprecedented wildfires in the Western U.S. scorched more than 1 million acres in less than a month.
